Jack Van Steenburg recently formed a consulting business, CMV Safety Experts, LLC. He brings years of extensive knowledge of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s expectations and views to motor carriers, attorneys, and safety groups to assure CMV safety operations are sound and safe.

Van Steenburg retired from FMCSA in May of 2023, after serving 15 years in the agency. He was the Executive Director and Chief Safety Officer for the FMCSA, and the first person to hold the title of Executive Director. Overall, he was responsible for day-to-day operations of FMCSA including all safety, compliance, registration, rulemaking, research, and licensing activities.  He led an agency of 1,355 employees and managed a budget close to $1 billion. He retired as the Agency’s highest-ranking career employee,

Previously, Van Steenburg served as FMCSA’s Director of Enforcement and Compliance.

Before joining FMCSA in 2008, he served in the New York State Police for 25 years and rose through the ranks of Trooper to Staff Inspector.

He also served as the elected President of the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance and participated on their executive committee for a decade.

He holds an Associate’s degree in Criminal Justice, Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, and a Master’s degree in Public Administration.
